1. GENERAL DISCRIPTION

The scope of the Department's activities includes offering undergraduate and graduate courses and research possibilities to solve problems related to irrigation and drainage i. The Department participate farmer-training programs, seminars and join interdisciplinary projects with other departments and organizations in Worldwide Two associate professors, one assistant professors and one research assıstant are currently employed in the department. We, as a department, aspire to make Harran Plain a model in a global society for stewardship and responsible use of soil and water resources. We value organizational dynamics that respond to changing needs. We identify priority issues at the local, national and international levels through open discussion among ourselves and our partners.

The specialization areas in this field are irrigation and drainage, agricultural hydrology, soil and water conservation structures, land consolidation, rural settlement planning, and environmental control. In the department there are laboratories for Irrigation and drainage.

The department has a surveying, irrigation, drainage and soil mechanics for practices and scientific research, a department library with journals and books written Turkish and other languages, a computer lab for undergraduate and graduate students. Department graduates are generally employed in Ministry of Agriculture, General Directorate of Rural Affairs, GAP Regional Development Administration, other state institutions, and private sector.

The department has 2 associate, 1 assistant professors and 1 research assıstant. It offers undergraduate and graduate programs but not Ph.D. program. For further information please refer to www.harran.edu.tr /ziraat/index.htm or call 0-90-414-318-3000.

1.1. Departmental Facilities

The department of agricultural structure and irrigation building (sharing with the other departments) consists of offices, classrooms, and laboratories. Right now, there are some difficulties finding offices for everyone but soon department of agricultural engineering will move to the main campus and will solve most of the problems related to offices, laboratories, and computer labs.

The department of agricultural engineering has 20 computers available to undergraduate students use. The department of agricultural structure and irrigation shares three irrigation, and soil testing labs with other departments. In those labs most of the soil related measurement can be performed.

1.2. Qualification Awarded

The department offers education in both undergraduate and graduate programs. The department offers undergraduate classes related to the agricultural structure, irrigation, and also drainage. Duration of classes for undergraduate program lasts for 4 years and graduate program is set for 2 years.

1.3. Educational and Professional Goals

The department of agricultural structures and irrigation tries to provide knowledge of the science and technology in agricultural structures, irrigation, and drainage. Students are educated to be able to have sound knowledge and understanding in their field of study. Professional goals include; conducting research projects on problems related to irrigation and drainage in the GAP region, tries to adopt new development and technologies in irrigation and drainage in the area, and pass the information to the farmers in the region.

1.4. Service Courses

The department of agricultural structures and irrigation offer the following courses to the other departments.

TYS-106 Climatology I

The layers of atmosphere, shape, components, solar radiation, wind, precipitation and other related topics are taught.

TYS-204 Measurement Systems

Basic measurement tools used in agricultural fields and their uses and applications are taught.

ZMT-504 Structural Materials

Material use in agricultural structure such as gravel, sand, cement, …..etc. are introduced.

TYS-307 Engineering Mechanic

Forces effecting agricultural structures and how they are determined are taught.

TYS- 301 Fluid Mechanics

Basic definitions in fluid mechanic and how fluids behave in different situations are taught.

TYS-503 Irrigation and Drainage

Different irrigation techniques such as surface, drip, and sprinkler irrigation and how they are used in agricultural field and drainage problems and solutions are taught to the students.

2. RESEARCH FACILITIES AND LABORATORIES

The department of agricultural structures and irrigation has one lab that is in their use and 2 soil labs used by both the department agricultural structures and irrigation and soil science.
